The Client: UD Trucks
Headquartered in Japan, UD Trucks is a leading global manufacturer of commercial vehicles. Established in 1935, the firm has consistently led the way in innovation, driven by a steadfast mission to deliver the trucks and services required by the modern world, and has a strong presence in over sixty countries across the globe.
The Challenge
In 2021, UD Trucks underwent a transition from the Volvo group to the Isuzu group. This transition posed a considerable challenge in terms of decoupling and realigning IT systems, solutions, and services across different geographical locations. Notably, the popular fleet management systems provided to end customers in various markets by UD Trucks presented a particularly challenging aspect. Any disruption in such a service had the potential to impact the operations of end customers significantly.
In response to these challenges, UD Trucks started developing an in-house solution that would align with its current business model and, while optimizing the operating costs, would provide for feature enhancements and customizations in the coming year.
The Solution
To fulfill its requirement for a bespoke in-house solution that could integrate seamlessly with its existing infrastructure, UD Trucks collaborated with Persistent Systems due to its expertise in Google Maps Solution.
Persistent provided essential support to UD Trucks during their migration from the legacy system to a new platform. This successful transition was facilitated by the development of Geofencing APIs, an Engine, and a Geofence Loader API. These tools were instrumental in transferring master data from the legacy system to the new platform seamlessly, ensuring a smooth process without any downtime.
We introduced a solution built on the Google Maps Platform to manage compute-intensive tasks. This approach simplifies fleet management through geofence monitoring, generating instant alerts for a transport Fleet Operations Team via stream processing.
Our solution was tailor-made to address the specific business challenges encountered by UD Trucks. Further, the client did not have to invest in third-party libraries/licenses, saving costs.
The Outcome
With the Google Map-based API solution set up by Persistent, UD Trucks has been able to own, operate, and maintain the solution internally, eliminating the need to depend on external vendors. The Geofencing solution was deployed across sixteen global markets in several phases, covering all fleet management service users. Empowered by the new solution, UD Trucks is bullish on increasing the usage of geofencing services among its subscriber base.
Collaboration with Persistent System helped us to create an advanced in-house fleet monitoring system epitomizing our commitment to innovation in logistics. The geofence solution helps our customers to precisely track their fleet and optimize ETAs, providing real-time, customized alerts on their vehicles’ locations and speed limits. It has enhanced transporter’s operational efficiency and thus help them in providing, timely and secure deliveries.
