The California Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) is a state government agency that aims to improve the lives of children in California by providing the general public with services related to the review, enforcement, and administration of child support.
The Challenge
To successfully continue their mission of helping parents honor their support obligations, DCSS needed to improve the agility of their services. DCSS was challenged by an aging legacy infrastructure footprint, outdated hardware, and complex infrastructure that did not allow them to support their desired self-service, on-demand model that would meet their changing business needs. They wanted to move to a support structure that was less expensive and more flexible.
Additionally, their existing on-prem infrastructure lacked the agility to deliver timely remediation for business continuity and security risks. They wanted to move to the cloud so they could develop more innovative services on an agile, scalable, and inexpensive cloud infrastructure.
The Solution
DCSS was looking for an implementation and modernization partner to migrate legacy Unix workloads to the Azure Cloud. Microsoft reached out to DataGlove, now part of Persistent, based on their broad Azure expertise and experience providing legacy migration and modernization to various state and local governments.
The Persistent team performed a discovery of the customer environment and built a detailed inventory and configuration report on the Unix-based custom and COTS applications. This was followed by an assessment of applications to identify compatibility and migration methods needed for a successful migration to the Azure Cloud.
The team also assessed on-prem DB2 databases to be migrated to Azure and built a cloud migration roadmap for the customer. They re-platformed the workloads on Azure following this roadmap.
Persistent is currently involved in application support and enhancement on cloud as a managed service delivery.
The Outcome
Moving to Azure cloud helped DCSS enhance operational efficiency and realize significant cost savings by reducing operational complexities. Implementing infrastructure as code drove agility and allowed DCSS to enable scale-on-demand.
By establishing a secure, scalable, and flexible foundation on Azure, DCSS is now more responsive to changing business needs and better prepared for any possible future disruptions.
